Presentation:
  • Climate change has transformed the dynamics of natural systems around the world. The changing interaction between the human and non-human world is one of the main reasons. Scientists, social scientists, urban planners and policy makers are struggling to adequately manage ecosystem changes, especially in urbanized areas. However, the exploitation and degradation of natural resources that have led to the contemporary ecological crisis are not new, especially in Latin America. There is a shared history of colonization led by resource extraction interests, coupled with a constant search for modernity that imports Anglo-European urban models and practices. This includes urban inequality in housing due to market dynamics, automobile dominance, and lack of understanding and visibility of ecosystem interactions.
  • There are different approaches to guarantee ecosystem services in urban areas and for comprehensive ecological conservation or restoration practices. Added to this historical framework, Latin America faces extreme weather events caused by climate change, unhealthy atmospheres, vacillation between too much and too little water, deforestation and other damage to rural-urban interactions that foster water and food security crises.
  • The numerous countries that make up Latin America are home to different ecosystems, territorial governance practices, peoples and political regimes. We seek discussions that allow us to collectively address a range of countries, regions and cities across the continent and compare the origins and state of urban ecosystem management in the region. We strive to engage in an in-depth debate on the contemporary management of urban ecology and ecological design in Latin America. These actions impact the daily lives and livelihoods of urban and suburban residents, including where and how they stay, work, survive, and prepare for the future.

Addressed to:
Ecologists, biologists, historians, anthropologists, geographers, landscapers, architects, urban planners, urban designers, as well as other scholars and experts in the humanities and social sciences willing to debate the state of Latin American urban ecosystems.

Goals:
  1. Address the concern for the sustainable and resilient management of urban ecosystems in Latin America and bring different perspectives to the center of the transdisciplinary debate. 
  2. Understand the geological, historical, governance and cultural legacies, as well as the contemporary social, political and economic conditions that have led to the precariousness of ecosystems, especially in densely populated settlements.
  3. Combine these various disciplines to create more resilient urban ecosystems, capable of withstanding new climate crises and preserving the future of cities.​
